The Road To Radnor

I'll be keeping you posted on our annual trip to Radnor High School. This was the only tournament against other High Schools that we went to last year and we were able to take home a Division II second place finish having lost the championship round by only 2 points. This year we'd like to bring home the big trophy and even more importantly, finish first in the Spirit standings.

The date is currently set at Sat. March 24th. We have lots to do before it's official. We are already on Radnor's mail list. Now we need to wait till late Jan/ early Feb for them to release the info and start accepting bids. From there we need to apply for our field trip approval. Once all that goes through our officer board will look into the following.

Rostering for the tournament. Only 25 players can go and only 20 can be active with the other 5 on back up.

Practicing for the tournament. It's in March, so we won't have much time to practice, and it may even still be snowy when we start.

Gather a fan following. It's a far trip, but we have some major games and high points and we could use for some supper fans to come along. This year we are going to try to develop a car pool of support from parents, alumni, non-playing students, and friends to come cheer on the cats. Lets get some Ultimate Super-Fans out there!

2 Yard Hammerfest Results

Last year's "1 Yard Hammerfest" was a big success and this year's sequal the "2 Yard Hammerfest", sponsored by Daredevil Discs, 5Ultimate, and VC Ultimate were just as successful.

It all went down on April 30th. Here are the final results.

1st- ESU alumni

3rd- Philly Pigeons (club)
4th- Ramapo College
5th- ESU
6th- King's College
7th- Scranton Univ
8th- Montclair State Univ
9th- Western Wayne High School
10th- Slipped Discs (club)

And the spirit award went to King's college and they had Ramapo nipping at their heels for it. The feedback so far was good. We'll do it again next year at the "3 Yard Hammerfest". Thanks again to all the teams that make this sport one of the best sports to play.

Western Wayne Takes Second in Division 2

The cats had great success in their first all high school tournament. To do so, the cats headed out toward King of Prussia to play at the beautiful Radnor High School Campus. Here's the results of the day.

The cats missed the championship by two points and brought home the 2nd place trophy! The cats played well, had a great time, and made lots of friends along the way. We'd like to thank Radnor high school for hositng and letting us attend.

Western Wayne Upsets 2 College Teams

On a recent cold, rainy Saturday morning, the Western Wayne High School Ultimate Frisbee team began an eight-hour tournament against 13 college teams and knowing that the odds of placing better than last place were against them. However, after seven rounds, the Cats finished an amazing 11 out of 14.

Among their accomplishments were two wins against Haverford College (8-7) and Wilkes University B team (10-7), wins even more astounding since they were expected to be shut out by some of the top college teams. “All teams play five guys and two girls at all times,” said science teacher and Ultimate Frisbee coach Anthony Zoppi. “These were high school kids against college kids, sometimes a high school freshman against a college senior.” The Wildcats never scored less than three against any team and upset two. WW scored three points against both Eastern College (who came in second in the whole tournament) and Wilkes University A team (who placed third).

“Two seniors, Ryan Lee and James Hanley, even showed up at the start of round 5 after taking their SATs all morning. And all 21 members of the team were academically eligible for the tournament,” boasted Zoppi.

College teams that played in the tournament included Wilkes University A and B, Eastern College, Haverford A and B, Bard College, University of Scranton, West Chester University, Marist College, University of Southern Connecticut, Kings College, West Coast (a private team), and Team Heim (a private team). Western Wayne was the only team from a high school. Some college teams are a mix of college students and alumni and have enough players to field two separate teams.

Zoppi said that “Wilkes plans on doing another tournament in the spring and the Cats were told they would be invited to try for more upsets. We also plan to host a tournament at home in the spring where they can try for some upset wins in front of a home crowd.”

Playing that day for the Wildcats were: Andrew Warnock, Taylor McDevitt, Ryan McDevitt,Ryan Lee, Brendan Snyder, Rachel Yamialkowski, Ronald Mrsich, James Hanley, Melody McClintock, Johnny Sizemore, Ronald Sizemore, John Anderson, Michael Koch, Tyler Gale, Amanda Bowden, Samantha Parr, Doug Evarts, David Gilligan, Wayne Gilligan, Tarina Usher, Timothy Plaza, and Sarah Hampton.

The best part of it is spirit of the game. You can see from the picture how well the two teams get along even though they are rival teams.

Points to Remember

Just to re-emphasize a couple of points:

Quick, accurate movement of the disc is essential for the offense. It keeps defenses off balance and out of position, and creates opportunities for the offense.

If someone is open, throw it to them!

If someone is open breakside, throw it to them! Do not say "I couldn't make that throw, or the mark was there". You need to learn to make the break mark throws, practice them.

Play FAST, but do not rush! Ulti is a fast, transition game. We need to take advantage of turnovers, before the other team has a chance to set. We need to move the disc right away on pulls, with a set string or play. We are going to be a fit team, that uses our fitness and speed of play to run other teams down. (I hope you are running to stay in shape).

We need to work on using short give n go passes more.

Keep working on AWARENESS. Always know where the disc is. Always know where your mark is. Always feel the flow, and anticipate the next logical pass. Always know the game conditions Always be in a position to help your teammate, on O or D. Do not be the noob that says, "I didn't see the disc," or get pwned because you didn't know the force.

Do not worry to much about catching and throwing perfectly, that will get better with time. If you want to improve you catching, carry a disc around. Sleep with it. Carry it in your hand when running. And when you have time, throw, throw, and throw.

And What better way to follow it up then with my return to ESU 10 years later with the next generation of Ultimate players.
